Today in history

June 15 stands as one of the most consequential dates in the timeline of human history. From foundational shifts in global democracy and military leadership to eccentric medical milestones and the silencing of legendary voices, this date has shaped the world in unexpected ways.

Major Historical Milestone: The Birth of Rule of Law

On June 15, 1215, a tense gathering took place in a muddy English meadow called Runnymede. Surrounded by rebellious nobles, an unpopular King John was forced to attach his royal seal to the Magna Carta (the "Great Charter"). Driven by a dispute over heavy taxes and abuse of power, this peace treaty introduced a revolutionary concept: even the king was subject to the law. It laid the early groundwork for modern constitutional governance and civil liberties across the globe.

A Timeline of June 15

First Documented Human Blood Transfusion

1667

Dr. Jean-Baptiste Denys, a physician to French King Louis XIV, successfully transfused a small amount of sheep's blood into a feverish 15-year-old boy. Amazingly, the teenager survived the highly experimental (and incredibly risky) procedure.

George Washington Appointed Commander-in-Chief

1775

The Continental Congress unanimously selected George Washington to lead the newly formed Continental Army. He officially took command of the revolutionary forces just as the American War of Independence was escalating.

Arlington National Cemetery Established

1864

During the height of the American Civil War, U.S. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton signed an order officially setting aside 200 acres of the confiscated estate of Confederate General Robert E. Lee to create a military burial ground.

First Moving Pictures Captured

1878

Photographer Eadweard Muybridge set up a row of 12 trip-wire cameras to capture a galloping horse. The resulting sequence of high-speed photos proved for the first time that all four of a horse's hooves leave the ground at once, effectively birthing the concept of motion pictures.

Eruption of Mount Pinatubo

1991

In the Philippines, Mount Pinatubo underwent a cataclysmic eruption, marking the second-largest volcanic event of the 20th century. The massive cloud of ash and sulfur dioxide injected into the atmosphere caused global temperatures to temporarily drop by roughly 0.5 °C (0.9 °F).

Notable Births

June 15 has been an incredibly fertile day for legendary artists, musicians, and screen icons:

  • Lisa del Giocondo (1479): The Italian noblewoman who sat for Leonardo da Vinci and became immortalized as the face of the Mona Lisa.

  • Edvard Grieg (1843): Celebrated Norwegian Romantic-era composer and pianist, best known for his Peer Gynt suite (which includes "In the Hall of the Mountain King").

  • Waylon Jennings (1937): Powerhouse American singer-songwriter and a pioneer of the rugged "Outlaw Country" movement.

  • Harry Nilsson (1941): Grammy-winning pop-rock vocalist who achieved massive commercial success with hits like "Without You" and "Everybody's Talkin'".

  • Ice Cube (1969): Born O'Shea Jackson, the highly influential rapper, songwriter, and actor who helped define West Coast hip-hop.

  • Courteney Cox (1964) & Neil Patrick Harris (1973): Two massive forces in American television, famous for their respective decade-defining roles as Monica Geller on Friends and Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother.

Notable Deaths

The world also said goodbye to some deeply influential historical figures on this day:

  • James K. Polk (1849): The 11th President of the United States, who died of cholera just three months after his single term in office ended.

  • Ella Fitzgerald (1996): The "First Lady of Song". Over a career spanning six decades, the iconic jazz vocalist won 14 Grammy Awards and sold over 40 million albums, leaving behind an unmatched vocal legacy.

  • Casey Kasem (2014): The beloved American disc jockey and radio icon who hosted the iconic countdown show American Top 40 for decades.
