TODAY IN HISTORY — JUNE 29
June 29 is a date that gave the world Shakespeare's Globe Theatre — and then took it away. It's also the day the iPhone arrived, a day cosmonauts perished in space, and the birthday of one of literature's most beloved figures.
ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY
In 1613, during a performance of William Shakespeare's Henry VIII, a theatrical cannon misfired and sparks caught the thatched roof of the legendary Globe Theatre in London. Within an hour, the iconic wooden structure — where many of Shakespeare's greatest plays had debuted — burned completely to the ground. Everyone escaped unharmed. National Weather Service

However, during re-entry, a ventilation valve accidentally opened and the capsule depressurized in the vacuum of space. All three men perished — the only human beings to have died in space above the Karman line. National Weather Service
In 1972, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Furman v. Georgia that capital punishment, as it was then being applied at the state and federal level, was unconstitutional. Weather Underground
